Over the last year i have met some wonderful people, farmers, orchard owners & allotment enthusiasts all growing wonderful fresh local food. In the summer we stumble upon lots of pop up stalls along the countryside roads selling their surplus to need fruit & vegetables, which provide a truly local artisan flavour to our preserves.
Here are a few of these lovely people..
Nestled on the edge of the Cotswold scarp between Cheltenham and Gloucester, Primrose Vale Farm Shop & PYO opened in May 2007. Our speciality is growing super fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables picked daily from our fields. So whether you prefer robust winter roots, brassicas packed with nutrients, your quintessential soft summer fruits or the first cut of asparagus, there’s plenty grown at Primrose Vale to suit everyone’s tastes.
Fresh from our fields
Plenty of winter vegetables, picked daily, including parsnips, swede, sprouts, savoy cabbage, January King cabbage, leeks, beetroot and celeriac. Plenty of squash, which keeps so well, including pumpkins, crown prince, kabotcha, turk's turban and acorn are still available.
Fruit and Vegetables
The Farm itself produces a large range of 80 different varieties of fruit and vegetables. What we don’t produce we source locally, to make this one stop shop for all fresh produce.
Brand Green Fruit Farm was just a few grassy fields when Mrs Osborne and her husband moved there some 50 years ago.
In the early days the couple belonged to a growers' co-operative which supplied their produce to high class greengrocers and market stalls alike.
A seemingly disastrous hail storm led to the introduction of farm gate sales in 1970 and these quickly grew into an institution.
Hilter Fruit Farm is situated on a South facing, sandy soil site in beautiful countryside on the Gloucestershire Herefordshire border, (you can see the Cotswolds to the front, MayHill to the side and the Malverns to the rear) and runs alongside the old Hereford - Gloucester canal; currently home to numerous Geese, Swans, Coots, Moorhens, Herons, Buzzards, the odd Cormorant or two, Kingfishers, Woodpeckers and thousands of Frogs.
The orchard was planted in 1977 and Richard & Jenni have been growing apples here since 1984, when the only apples grown were Cox, Spartan, Golden Delicious, Discovery and Bramleys.
Since then we have diversified into Asparagus, Strawberries, Raspberries and Apple Juice and planted a whole range of new varieties of apple, as well as Pears. Newly planted and available in 2010 are APRICOTS, a first for this area.
